Chapter 39

A knock on the train compartment door interrupted his story, and Raph stashed his vape. He could see the ace’s hands preparing for an attack, but the door squeaked open to show a steward shifting with the movement of the train, asking for their tickets. Raph handed them to her and gave a wide smile. She left, taking one last look at the Angel staring back at her.

“You were saying,” Kap grunted as soon as they were alone again.

Raph glanced up at the wizard, who simultaneously had all the qualities of a stick in the mud who also had a stick firmly up his butt. He was boring, bossy, and sucked all the fun out of any room he was in. Plus, he was an ace. But Raphael had seen into his mind, and he knew Kap was a good man. Even Raph could admit, Kap’s play at patience had put them on the right track, and he could forgive all the ace’s fussiness if it meant finding Sig and Dai.

Kap was staring hard back at him. Raph wondered what Kap had seen when he looked into his mind.

Smart not telling him the whole truth, Remi chimed in. Do you think if he really knew what went down between you and Flemming, he’d let you within ten feet of your ‘girls’?

Raph took another long toke, trying to bury the voice with a buzz. He had no intention of letting Kap know the full story. He still needed the wizard’s help after all. And if his plan succeeded, the small lie wouldn’t matter.

His eyes turned to a placard on the back of the door, safety instructions written in several languages. He stared as if enthralled by it, but it was only to keep his eyes off the other passenger in the car. Finally, knowing Kap would never relent, he said, “So the key to Flemming’s power was a talisman, a gift straight from the Alpha that preceded your girl.”

“What did it do?” Kap asked, leaning in with his elbows balanced on his knees.

“It gave him cover—literally. The TM was basically a personal forcefield, which meant that no matter how hard he leaned on people, no matter how hard he pushed, no one could push back, not without burning their hands. It was the crown jewel of his empire, but it was also literally a crown jewel. Bigger than my dick and with more carats than I could count, the diamond was inscribed with enough runes to power the forcefield, which was produced by a thick golden band that Flemming wore on his head. At all times.”

“I don’t like where this is going.”

Raph barked out a laugh. “Neither did Flemming. I stole the diamond and took off into the night.”

“Wait, you said he never let the thing leave his sight. How’d you pull it off?”

Raph laughed again, but this time he couldn’t help but let a little nervousness seep in. “Honestly man... you really don’t want to know. I told you he liked me, right? Well, he really liked me.
